The recipe for this layout:
Add together an antique pedestal table, a vintage and bedecked bottle, an irresistably cute face, a paper skirt and a pair of wings. Then add a flower pot for a hat and Tiffany lamp for a parasol and you have a very curious thing; "a thing with wings".

Mother's Mid-Century-Modern Bureau

Mother's Mid-Century-Modern Bureau

My mother had a life-long interest in woodworking and furniture making.

A graduate of Great Bend Kansas High School in the late 20s, mother opted for shop instead of home economics. The next year, the school passed a rule - you guessed it - prohibiting girls from taking shop.

When my family lived in Venezuela during the halcyon days of the late 50s and early 60s, Mother bought a Shopsmith and built several pieces of furniture.

This photo shows the top of the only remaining piece. It is a bureau in a Mid-Century-Modern style made of beautiful, thick Venezuelan mahogany.

The top and sides are each made from a single plank.

This photo will give you a general sense of the dimension of the wood and the wood's beautiful grain and color.

As the drawers are quite shallow and the piece lived in our dining room in Caracas, I think it was meant to store table linens.

Ah, the expat life!

I estimate Mother made the piece in the late 50s or the very early 60s. Apart from the date the piece was made, the other mystery is whether Mother designed the piece herself or worked from someone else's plans.

Well, you don't build something such as this and have it last 50-plus years without knowing something about furniture making.

At the very least Mother must have had a reference book or two that explained such basics as how to assemble drawers and how to design and build the interior frame that holds the drawers and provides some structure to the piece.

I'd like to think Mother took what she needed from reference books and then designed the bureau on her own. Then again, Mother was an accomplished seamstress who made clothes from pre-printed patterns, so maybe she did use a published pattern for the bureau.

I'll wager, though, that even if this bureau came from someone else's pattern, it's the only one ever made from exquisite old Venezuelan mahogany.

By the time I was old enough to pay attention to and remember what was going on around me - that would have been the early 60s - Mother had accomplished what she set out to do with furniture making, and had moved on to ceramics in a big way.

I took this photo on August 22, 2009, but I backdated it in flickr to 1958 so it would fit in reasonable chronological order into my set on our life abroad.

Home-made dining table (2)

Home-made dining table (2)

I made this table as a test piece in 1999. I had purchased a large white pine tree and had it milled up into planks, 14 feet by 2.5 inches by (up to) 40 inches, with the intention of using them to replace my living room floor during renovations of our east Sangerville farm house. I wanted to have the widest pine floors in east Sangerville. After they had dried five years in my barn, I took half of one plank to build this table, to see what the wood was like to work with.

Ultimately, I went with a different plan for the flooring, and sold or used most of the pine planks for home-made furniture. The two largest planks (40" wide) were bought by the owner of Spring Creek Bar-B-Q in Monson, for restaurant tables.

Carnac, Brittany, France

Carnac, Brittany, France

This is the most amazing place to visit. My photographs do not do justice as to what it is like - the stones cover a huge area - why are they there, what do they signify??

From Wikipedia;

The Carnac stones are an exceptionally dense collection of megalithic sites around the French village of Carnac, in Brittany, consisting of alignments, dolmens, tumuli and single menhirs. The more than 3,000 prehistoric standing stones were hewn from local rock and erected by the pre-Celtic people of Brittany, and are the largest such collection in the world. Local tradition claims that the reason they stand in such perfectly straight lines is that they are a Roman legion turned to stone by Merlin —Brittany has its own local versions of the Arthurian cycle. A Christian legend associated with the stones held that they were pagan soldiers in pursuit of Pope Cornelius when he turned them to stone.

Most of the stones are within the French commune of Carnac, but some to the east are within La Trinite-sur-Mer.

The stones were erected at some stage during the Neolithic period, probably around 3300 BC, but some may date to as old as 4500 BC.

In recent centuries, many of the sites have been neglected, with reports of dolmens being used as sheep shelters, chicken sheds or even ovens. Even more commonly, stones have been removed to make way for roads, or as building materials. The continuing management of the sites remains a controversial topic.

Alignments

There are three major groups of stone rows — Menec, Kermario and Kerlescan — which may have once formed a single group, but have been split up as stones were removed for other purposes.

Eleven converging rows of menhirs stretching for 1,165 metres, by 100 metres wide. There is what Alexander Thom considered to be the remains of stone circles at either end. According to the tourist office there is a "cromlech containing 71 stone blocks" at the western end and a very ruined cromlech at the eastern end. The largest stones, around four metres high, are at the wider, western end; the stones then become as small as 0.6 metres high along the length of the alignment before growing in height again toward the extreme eastern end.

This fan-like layout recurs a little further along to the east in the Kermario alignment. It consists of 1029 stones in ten columns, about 1,300 metres in length. A stone circle to the east end, where the stones are shorter, was revealed by aerial photography.

Kerlescan alignments

A smaller group of 555 stones, further to the east of the other two sites. It is composed of 13 lines with a total length of about 800 metres, ranging in height from 80 cm to 4 metres. At the extreme west, where the stones are tallest, there is a stone circle which has 39 stones. There may also be another stone circle to the north.

Petit-Menec alignments

A much smaller group, further east again of Kerlescan, falling within the commune of La Trinite-sur-Mer. These are now set in woods, and most are covered with moss and ivy.

Tumuli

There are several tumuli, mounds of earth built up over a grave. In this area, they generally feature a passage leading to a central chamber which once held neolithic artefacts.

Tumulus of Saint-MichelSaint-Michel

The tumulus of Saint-Michel was constructed between 5000 BC and 3400 BC. At its base it is 125 m by 60 m, and is 12 m high. It required 35,000 m? of stone and earth. Its function was the same as that of the pyramids of Egypt: a tomb for the members of the ruling class. It contained various funerary objects, such as 15 stone chests, pottery, jewellery, most of which are currently held by the Museum of Prehistory of Carnac. It was excavated in 1862 by Rene Galles with a series of vertical pits, digging down 8 metres. Le Rouzic also excavated it between 1900 and 1907 discovering the tomb and the stone chests.

A chapel was built on top in 1663 but was rebuilt in 1813, before being destroyed in 1923. The current building is an identical reconstruction of the 1663 chapel, built in 1926.

Moustoir 47°36?43?N 3°03?39?W? / ?47.6119, -3.0608[14]

Also known as Er Mane, it is a chamber tomb 85 m long, 35 m wide, and 5 m high. It has a dolmen at the west end, and two tombs at the east end. A small menhir, approximately 3m high, is nearby.

Dolmens

There are several dolmens scattered around the area. These dolmens are generally considered to have been tombs, constructed with several large stones supporting a "capstone", then buried under a mound of earth. In many cases, the mound is no longer present, sometimes due to archeological excavation, and only the large stones remain, in various states of ruin.
